'Sax?' is a piece for saxophone, live electronics, voice and fixed medium. It builds upon my previous interests relating to extended instrumental technique. The piece makes use of sonic materials taken from the saxophone and 'Petterphone' (a descant recorder modified with a saxophone mouth piece) in order to explore and extend an instrument's sonic possibilities. As the piece develops, rhythms and gestures of vocal articulations are examined through processing techniques.The challenge for the performer is to integrate their improvisatory framework by developing materials that have their origins within the fixed acousmatic part. The performer may use a graphic/text-based score to help him/her locate areas of, for example, texture and melody that may be developed through the saxophone with live electronics.
